Travel Rewards Credit CardsTravel reward credit cards are a great option if you are someone that travels frequently.  Even if you only travel once every year or two, however, one of these cards may still be worthwhile for you to have.  In order to make this determination, you should ask yourself a few questions.

How Often Do I Travel?

Keep in mind that traveling does not necessarily just mean going away on vacation.  It can also mean business travel or simply renting a vehicle or even going out now and again to take in a Broadway show or other event.  Since travel rewards credit cards often offer extra protection, such as travel insurance and car rental insurance coverage, one of these cards may help you save money even if you won’t be cashing in on the reward points on a very regular basis.  Similarly, these cards often provide discounts for certain purchase.  So, if you like to just get away for an evening now and then, you might still be able to benefit from one of these cards.

How Flexible am I with Travel Arrangements?

If you have very good credit, you will likely qualify for a travel reward credit card that allows you to be more flexible with your travel arrangements.  If your credit is not so great, on the other hand, the only travel credit cards you qualify for may be those that have a number of black out dates and other restrictions.  In this case, you will need to be flexible with your travel plans if you wish to take advantage of the travel points that you earn.  Be sure to read the fine print of the credit card before you apply.  This way, you can make certain the card offers the flexibility you desire.

Will I Pay the Balance Off at the End of Each Billing Cycle?

Travel reward credit cards tend to have a higher interest rates than traditional credit cards that do not offer rewards.  Therefore, if you will be carrying a balance on your credit card from month to month, the value of the travel rewards probably will not be worth the cost of the finance charges you will have to pay.  If you will carry a balance only occasionally, on the other hand, a travel reward credit card may still be worthwhile.

Do I Frequently Pay with Credit Cards?

Travel Rewards Credit CardsIf you are someone that still tends to make the majority of your purchases with cash, you won’t reap the full benefits of having a travel reward credit card.  After all, you have to spend money with your card in order to earn the points that are redeemed for the travel rewards.  So, if you won’t be using your travel reward credit card on a regular basis, you likely won’t earn enough points to cash in on the travel rewards.  At the same time, if you mostly want the card for the travel insurance and other perks commonly associated with these cards, you might still want to apply for one.
